The Jade Dragon is owned by Stuart and Barbara Hilbert. The two of us lived in Japan and the Republic of China as teachers for seven years. We became collectors of Asian art in Asia and we began selling Asian art in the summer of 1968.
The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese zodiac, and there are basically three different types of dragons and many manifestations. The most important of the three is the "lung" dragon which is also the most powerful and frolics in the sky. This dragon is composed of basic elements of nine animals: deer's horns, carp's scales, tiger's paws, frog's belly, hawk's claws, snake's neck, rabbits eyes, cow's ears, and, not least, a snake's neck..
In all East Asian cultures, the Dragon is not the evil monster of Western mythology, but a symbolic animal that is capable of change and which represents strength, good fortune, and goodness in general. Because of it's perceived great power, this dragon has been associated with the authority of the Imperial Throne since the Han Dynasty. Supposedly, at least of the sky is the home of the Palace of the Green Dragon.
